A brief History of Khakis.
Cotton pants and Khakis date back to the 1840s in India (yes, we invented these bad boys) when British officers began to dye their uniforms with tea, mud, and curry powder in order to camouflage themselves for combat. The term “khaki” is a Hindi word meaning “dust-colored” and it was adopted to fit the color of the officers’ newly dyed clothes. Over time, the term took on the meaning of the actual woven material that modern day khakis are made from, and over the years khakis have become not only a staple of military fashion, but also one of everyday popular use.
Today, “khaki” is a term used in reference to a type of fabric, and can be used in both men’s and women’s clothing for various purposes. Khaki clothes can range anywhere from jackets to suits, to military uniforms, but they are most commonly known for their pants . Khaki material is made from 100 percent cotton and usually comes in a beige or tan color. However, khakis can come in different colors as well, all of which are usually earth-toned. This material is incredibly durable and versatile as it can be used for almost any situation. Khaki clothes, especially khaki pants, are a popular choice for men’s fashion and range in cut and style.
Khaki pants are by far the most common form that khaki material takes and are popularly referenced as simply “khakis.” These pants are light and durable and can take on several different earth colors for variety. They come in several different styles and are versatile in that they can be worn in both casual and professional settings.
